Managing Preservation & Growth: Playing Well with Others

The Houston-Galveston Education Council of Preservation Texas (PTEC) will present a full-day program on
Managing Preservation & Growth: Playing Well with Others. The program will focus on ways that cities and towns are managing growth within a historic context.
The program begins with an update on the new height and density regulations of Galveston presented by Lori Field Schwarz, Director of Historic Preservation for the City of Galveston. Following, Andrew Kaldis, Kaldis Development will discuss the renovation of the Panama Hotel into condominiums. Additional topics to be discussed include the renovation of buildings in the Strand Historic District, the future of the Strand by Bob Brown, Michael Gaertner Architects and Lesley Sommers, Historic Downtown Galveston Partnership, and dealing with structural issues of historic buildings in Galveston by Pat Sparks, P. E., Sparks Engineering. The seminar will conclude with a presentation by the company, As Is, on the use of laser scanning to document historic structures including a demonstration of a local landmark. The staff of the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) will provide a tour of the Bishop’s Place afterwards.
This seminar will be held on Friday, April 4, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in Galveston, Texas in the second floor courtroom of the Galveston Custom House. Registration is $85 for non members; $75 for Preservation Texas members and $65 for BIC members

Section 106: An Introduction

Learn the basics of project review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This seminar emphasizes practicalities-how to avoid pitfalls and victimization by myths. Discuss recent changes in regulations and procedures, with an emphasis on coordination with the National Environmental Policy Act and other laws. An agenda is available online at
