Preservation Texas is the advocate for preserving the historic resources of Texas.

PT is currently governed by a twenty-member Board of Directors supported by the executive director. The Board accomplishes the work of the organization with four standing committees: Advocacy, Board Development, Organizational Visibility, and Resource Development. In August 2007, the Board of Directors went through a strategic planning process and updated its goals for the years 2008-2010.

Current Programs

Annual Honor Awards Program serves the valuable purpose of encouraging the preservation of Texas' significant historic sites by honoring worthy efforts and projects. Preservation Texas honors individuals, government officials, businesses, organizations and news media that have made significant contributions to preservation efforts in Texas.

Building Industry Council a professional membership group within Preservation Texas that provides unique educational offerings and opportunities for collegial networking that demonstrate that historic preservation is good business.

Texas’ Most Endangered Places Program was initiated in 2003 to focus attention, encourage appreciation, and to generate support for threatened historic properties. Since the initial list was announced in 2004, 64 sites and 5 thematic listings have been selected to be included on the Texas’ Most Endangered Places list. Nominations for the Most Endangered Places list are made by local groups, individuals, and government agencies and submitted to PT. Traditionally, the annual list is announced during a press conference held on the steps of the Texas State Capitol building during Preservation Day. PT enlists the services of a public relations consultant to help garner press coverage of the list announcement.

Advocacy and Preservation Days/Summit. Working with a grassroots network, PT provides a unified voice for historic preservation in Texas. This is accomplished using an eAdvocacy network that reaches thousands of people in an instant with important news alerts and legislative updates and hosting annual Preservation Day events. During the State legislative session, PT hosts Preservation Days., a series of educational and advocacy sessions. The sessions are focused on educating attendees about current preservation issues and upcoming legislation agenda. Beginning in 2008 and taking place every two years, Preservation Texas will host a three-day summit for interested individuals and organizations from across the state. The Preservation Summit is an opportunity to identify issues related to the preservation of the historic built environment, develop strategic approaches and solutions to the issues, and to cultivate partnerships across the state.

Outreach and Membership. PT communicates with its members and partners with a quarterly newsletter, Preservation Texas Reporter, and e-mail alerts. The web site www.preservationtexas.org was online in 2001 and provides easy online access to preservation information and contacts. PT also hosts special events throughout the year include the Treasures of Texas Dinner, the Preservation Circle Dinner, an Annual Meeting, Preservation Day and the Preservation Roundtable.
