Preserving Texas’ historic and cultural past is a continuous challenge. Beginning in 2008 and taking place every two years, Preservation Texas will host a several-day summit for interested individuals and organizations from across the state. The Preservation Summit is an opportunity to identify issues related to the preservation of the historic built environment, develop strategic approaches and solutions to the issues, and to cultivate partnerships across the state. The Summit is not a conference with presentations and question/answer sessions; it is a dynamic format that is to be inclusive, to promote the exchange of preservation experiences, and is result based.

The purpose of the Summit is to:

  • Identify and prioritize major preservation issues in the state and identify a course of action to resolve those identified issues;
  • Attract a diverse audience that represents urban and rural communities from all 254 counties in Texas; and,
  • Focus on all aspects of historic preservation and community revitalization in our cities, small towns, and rural communities.

The Summit is organized as a series of meetings where local experiences and issues are brought forward for discussion. Smaller, roundtable meetings will be lead by a moderator and/or an expert in the field in order to facilitate a group discussion. Following the roundtables, Summit participants will gather in a larger-scale forum that will be moderated by knowledgeable leaders. At each forum, all of the previous discussions will be provide to each participant. The Summit will close with a final Forum that will recapture in information discussed in the roundtables and the earlier forums.

All of the roundtables and Forum will be held in the Texas State Capitol building. During the Summit, Preservation Texas will also host the Annual Membership Meeting and will announce the Texas' Most Endangered Places List.
