May is National Preservation Month!Get ready for Preservation Month 2011! Preservation events taking place throughout Texas...Saturdays in May Nacogdoches Downtown walking tours are back for the spring and will be offered at 10:30 a.m. each Saturday in May at the Visitor Center, located at 200 E. Main St. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased beginning at 10 a.m. the day of the tour. Children 12 and under are free. The walking tours are also one way Nacogdoches recognizes Historic Preservation Month. May 1 Granbury Preserve Granbury invites you to their Annual Membership Meeting and introduction of the new book, Historic Hood County. The event will take place at Historic Crockett’s Bounty, 2901 Temple Hall Highway at 11:00 am to 2pm. Lunch is free for members of Preserve Granbury and $10 for guests. May 1-2 Galveston The Historic Homes Tour is scheduled Saturdays, May 1 and 8, and Sundays, May 2 and 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tour includes 10 houses, six of which survived the Great Storm that struck Galveston in 1900. May 4 Abilene The Abilene Preservation League (APL) is hosting its third annual awards luncheon at 11:45. Special guest speaker is Bruce M. Shackelford, Abilene native, expert in Native American and Western Antiques. Mr. Shackelford is a regular guest appraiser on the PBS Series Antiques Roadshow. APL will present the Preservation Community Service Award to the Texas Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America and will introduce the Abilene Beautiful House of the Year Award. May 4th at 5:30 pm San Antonio Networking event at the San Antonio Museum of Art (Old Lonestar Brewery) with a tour of the addition designed by Overland Partners. Cash bar and light appetizers will be provided by SAMA’s new Café des Artistes under the creative direction of Chef Damien Watel. A guided Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse Tour of the museum will be offered by AIA architect Scott Carpenter. May 8 Austin Save Austin's Cemeteries will be offering walking tours from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m to help the people of Austin connect with our shared history through the stories of iconic places like Kerbey Lane Café and Zilker Park, and the people they’re named after. The tour will highlight the lives of a dozen of Austin’s most recognizable names. Tours are free and open to the public; optional donations benefit the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel restoration fund. May 15 Galveston Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas will host a May 15 gala reception to raise matching funds for a new roof on the 1892 Bishop’s Palace, Galveston’s top historic attraction and one of the nation’s best known Victorian mansions. Bishop’s Palace is managed by Galveston Historical Foundation, which has procured a $371,600 matching grant for work on the famed stone mansion at Broadway and 14th Street.
May 15 Hallettsville The Fourth Annual 3S “Solutions…Support…Success” Genealogy Symposium will be May 15, 2010. The topic will be Historic Building Restoration. May 16 Statewide The Annual Historic Sites Free Day will take place on May 16, 2010 at 19 of the Texas Historical Commission’s properties. The public will have an opportunity to experience the real stories of these real places for free admission all day Sunday. Historic Sites Free Day will be held in conjunction with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Preservation Month (www.preservationnation.org/take-action/preservation-month) and the National and Texas Travel and Tourism Week (May 8-16). All sites will participate in the Historic Sites Free Day by offering regular services and tours free to the public. May 28 Galveston Artist Robert Hurst will unveil his commerative painting of Jack Johnson and the "Fight of the Century". The Fight of the Century was July 4, 1910 in Reno, NV between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries. This summer will mark the 100th anniversary of the historic fight. Hurst is the official artist of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. This event will take place at Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway, Galveston from 4pm until 5pm. Free to the public. |
