Old Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral
Constructed in 1911, the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral first served as a parish for Irish immigrants. Architect Olle J. Lorehn of Houston designed the cruciform Gothic Revival building.
2004: Though well maintained and in use for daily masses, the archdiocese has pronounced the cruciform Gothic Revival building “unsound” and has announced plans to demolish it. In 2002, Ziegler Cooper Architects was hired to design a new co-cathedral nearby on St. Joseph Parkway.
2008: Construction of the new co-cathedral was completed in April of 2008. Shortly after the opening of the new structure, the archdiocese announced that the old 1911 co-cathedral on Pierce Street would be demolished and the site would become a parking lot for the new church.
2023: The old Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral was demolished in June of 2023.
