2024 Preservation Texas Historic Log Building Summit

The 2024 Preservation Texas Historic Log Building Summit will be held on Thursday, October 10th & Friday, October 11th in Nacogdoches. A half-day field session will be held on Thursday afternoon, followed by an opening reception and keynote at the Fredonia Hotel. In-person presentations will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Fredonia Hotel on Friday.
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Preservation Texas is inviting proposals for presentations at the 2024 Preservation Texas Historic Log Building Summit. The presentations are intended to provide participants with an overview of best practices in the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of historic log buildings in Texas. They should consist of illustrated case studies from 30 to 45 minutes in length, with time for Q&A, and ideally address one or more of the following:
Historic Context of Log Buildings in Texas
Origins and diffusion of vernacular log architecture
Regional log building types, forms, plans, and uses
Early 20th century "Log Building Revival" and the rustic park architecture movement
Log Building Construction Methods and Materials
Using dendrochronology and other investigative tools to date construction and alterations to log buildings
Composition and use of chinking
The historic use of milled exterior siding to conceal log structures
Historical corner notching styles and techniques
Documenting and Researching Historic Log Buildings
The use of modern technology to record log structures
Archival and other documentary resources to investigate log building history
State, regional, and local efforts to survey and document log structures
Log buildings and cultural landscapes
Historic Preservation and Restoration
Diagnosing physical issues, including identification of causes and appropriate mitigation and intervention strategies
Making decisions about removing later (non-log) alterations and additions
Designing appropriate modern alterations to historic log structures
Historic Log Structures as Public Museums
Reconstruction and relocation of log structures as part of the Texas Centennial (1936), U.S. Bicentennial (1976), or Texas Sesquicentennial (1986)
Mid-20th century relocation of log buildings to city parks, courthouse squares, and "heritage villages"
The material culture of log buildings
Innovative ideas for the interpretation of log building construction and preservation
The Future of Historic Log Buildings in Texas
Log building construction as a sustainable building practice
The importance of renewing and sustaining folk building traditions
Sourcing materials and locating qualified contractors for relocation, repair, and reconstruction of historic log buildings
Developing a Texas log building "heritage trail" network to support ongoing collaborative efforts in preservation and interpretation
The above list of topics is not exclusive. You are welcome to propose presentations on other related topics for consideration, but they must relate to Texas log buildings.
All speakers will have access to the Fredonia Hotel's audio and visual equipment and must include visual elements in their presentation. Speakers will receive complimentary registration to the full event and a $250 honorarium. We anticipate a post-Summit publication that will incorporate some, if not all of the presentations.
