Fort Ringgold Historic District

From 1848 to 1944, Fort Ringgold served as an important military outpost on the Rio Grande. Initially established as the southernmost installation of the western tier of forts constructed after the Mexican War, only one of the earliest frame buildings survives. The remaining historic resources were built after 1869 and are principally one and two-story brick structures laid out around a central parade ground. In 1993, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Fort Ringgold Historic District.

For nearly 80 years, Fort Ringgold has been owned by what is now known as the Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District. Many of those who attended school there have fond memories of the Fort and a desire to ensure its preservation. While some structures remain in use, many have suffered from the effects of deferred maintenance. A new nonprofit, Revive Fort Ringgold, is leading efforts to develop a long-term plan to raise awareness about Fort Ringgold, to promote its history and economic value as a heritage tourism asset, and to advocate for the preservation of its important historic resources.
