1939 Linden Fire Station

The Linden Fire Station was built in 1939 to house Linden’s existing volunteer fire department and a fire truck. It was constructed as a complement to the city’s Public Works Administration-funded 1934 Sanitary Waterworks - one of the first of two such infrastructure projects approved in the state of Texas.

The fire station was expanded in 1949 to make room for additional department vehicles and equipment. The City of Linden had the only fire station in Cass County until the 1950s, and many businesses and residences county-wide owe their survival to this early firefighting tradition. This station ceased operations in 1961 and subsequently suffered decades of deterioration due to neglect and water infiltration. The National Register-eligible building was included on our Most Endangered Places List in 2016.

Upon threat of demolition, Preservation Texas purchased the Fire Station from the City of Linden in 2022 with plans to adaptively reuse the building as a rental property. Initial stabilization work began in January 2024! The first phase of the project is being done by Andrei Moore Construction of Texarkana. It will address the exterior envelope of the building, including the reinforcement and repair of the walls. Later phases will include a new roof, installation of historically accurate windows and exterior doors, and finally, rehabilitation of the interior.

The total project is expected to cost in excess of $150,000. Contributions to this project can be made at the link below.
